Ditch Your Hand Sanitizer

Or How To Make Your Own Non Toxic Antibacterial Soap

Why You Don’t Want To Use A Commercial Hand Sanitizer

Antibacterial soaps contain chemical ingredients that are claimed to assist in killing bacteria. The majority of antibacterial soaps contain the chemical Triclosan.

Triclosan is a chlorinated aromatic compound that is used to reduce bacterial contamination. It is commonly added to antibacterial soaps and body washes, toothpastes and certain cosmetics. It also has many industrial uses.

Triclosan was first registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1969 as a pesticide!!

  • has been linked to heart disease and heart failure
  • has also been linked to disruption of hormone function
  • has also been linked to cancer, developmental defects, and liver and inhalation toxicity
  • contaminates streams and is toxic to wildlife
  • is no more effective than good old soap and water in fighting bacteria

Triclosan tends to become concentrated in the fatty tissues of humans and animals. This chemical has been detected in human breast milk, and the blood and is linked to use of body care products containing Triclosan.

Triclosan has been detected in the urine of 75% of the U.S. population.

How To Make Your Own Non Toxic Antibacterial Hand Cleaner

Always take care when handling essential oils. Keep in mind these are very concentrated, powerful plant extracts. You may want to pre-test by using a small amount of an essential oil on your skin and wait overnight to check for any reactions before slathering on your hand sanitizer.

Making Your Own Natural Hand Sanitizer

5 drops Clove essential oil
5 drops Cinnamon essential oil
15 drops Lavender essential oil
10 drops Rosemary essential oil
10 drops Tea Tree (also known as Melaleuca) essential oil
1/4 cup aloe vera gel

You can adjust the quantities of oils used to suit your own taste or even add oils of your preference. I would keep the powerfully antiseptic oils clove and cinnamon to a minimum as these are fairly “hot”.

Beware that you must use real essential oils and not the chemically altered ones.
